Nope. Never was the plan, as I recall. A large chunk of it is temporary, but some will remain. Hence the complaints.

The website says that this will be in the city's near south side. I thought that this whole thing was going to be on the old Meigs Field?
God no. There's no WAY all that could be housed on Northerly Island. Even if it could, why would it? That area where they're proposing the Olympic Village is pretty sparse. I understand it's in that giant truck staging area between McCormick Place and 31st. Is that right?

If you want more information, visit Chicago2016.org.
By football are you referring to American football? Because thats not an olympic sport.

Im curious where baseball would be played. Any chance that could be done in Wrigley? Not a cubs fan by any stretch but I imagine that would be pretty cool.

Maybe the website says something, i'll have to check it out.

Baseball is no longer an Olympic sport (or at least won't be as of 2012).

OK, so I agree that the olympics would be great for Chicago, however, do you really think we have a shot? I mean, we couldn't even hold a marathon without running out of water.....

Well, that was a little bit of a fluke. It was over 80 degrees in October. That's pretty rare.

If we miss it, it won't be because of our inability to host, in my opinion. They've been wanting to put the games in South America or Africa for years, and now they have a shot with the Rio bid. I think they'll get the games.

Comparing the Chicago marathon to the Olympics is rediculous. The marathon is open to anyone willing to pay the registration fee (who may or may not have trained adeqautely). And the weather last year was a freak occurrence. In comparison, the Olympics consists of a very select group of elite athletes who train years for a brief moment of performance, and is run by the IOC. One has absolutely zero bearing on the other.

Wow, I had completely forgotten about that. Thanks.

I just did a little research on it. Baseball and Softball both remain on the voting docket. I believe if an American City gets the bid there will be a strong push to vote both baseball and softball in.

Personally I don't think they belong as an Olympic event (hell, cricket has much more of an international following than baseball does.) Besides, does anyone really get excited about Olympic baseball? I sure don't.

Point taken about it being run by different groups. My point is that we hosted an athletic event that the nation looked at as being a disaster (yes, it was a fluke due to weather) so I think that could hurt. Maybe not.

Id say cricket and baseball are about on par as far as an international following...

Baseball is mainly North American, Latin America, and Part of South America.

Cricket is the UK, Australia, India, Pakistan, and a few other small countries (Bangladesh and Sri Lanka come to mine.)

Edit: I believe south africa has cricket as well.

I would also say baseball is growing at a faster rate than cricket internationally. Many Universities in Australia are developing club teams (I played on one).

Italy and Israel both have competitive leagues as well.

Its obvious im a little more bias towards baseball than cricket. I went to a few cricket matches in Australia and was incredibly bored. The best part was just the party like atmosphere.

Now Aussie Rules Football on the other hand is an amazing sport!
