Well you can find a little graffiti almost anywhere. I been to lansing(not to mention I live in the s. suburbs), and its not crime ridden. I been to Wicker Park, and I seen graffiti on buildings, but Wicker Park is known as trendy and safe. I think there is a double standards when it comes to city vs. suburbs.

He/she's probably referring to Calumet City.

1952-1965 Resident is on a distinguished road
Default Avoid Lansing

Lived here from 1952 -1965. Went to grade schools ( public ) and high school ( 1 yr ), then moved northwest. I have family in Lansing ( sister and parents moved back ). No matter what is said about " diversity ", which is good, Lansing is changing and to me it does not have much promise for positive growth going forward. To the south is Cal City. I wouldn't drive an armored vehicle through Cal City. It's gone. To the west, South Holland. People walking down the middle of 167th street at all hours, hanging out on corners and in front of businesses. Not an inviting place. The only thing IMO that will curtail Lansing's slide into blight is the credit crisis we are in and the unwillingness of lenders to make loans to credit challenged people. When financial markets recover, property value and property condition will be on the low side and may not be desirable for even first time buyers. Sorry Lansing, you were once this kids vast playground.

Apparently, they didn't teach you geography very well.

Calumet City is to the north of Lansing (and many, many people drive through Cal City unscathed in normal cars). Thornton and Glenwood are to the west of Lansing, not South Holland. Also, there is no 167th Street in South Holland for "people to walk down the middle of".

I would guess they means 162nd not 167th - even though there is a 167th in So Holland.

And I wish I drove an armored car every time I needed to go into Cal City. I'd feel a little safer.

There are lots of little bits of 167th St in South Holland, but nowhere that anyone just driving through would see. Since I moved away from the S suburbs, I don't drive on 162nd as much as used to, but when I did I never saw anyone walking in the middle of it.

What happened in Cal City when you were driving through that made you feel unsafe enough to wish for an armored car?

Hmmm ... let's see - the prostitutes, the drug dealers, the grown men hanging around on street corners in the middle of the day, the abandoned houses with 2 foot tall grass ...

How do those affect you when you are driving through? Of course, I could see those things being an issue for a resident, but those of us who just drive through on the main streets (Torrence, Burnham, Wentworth, 159th, Sibley) don't usually see those things.

I've never been hurt by or scared of 2-foot tall grass or people hanging out on corners, but if you feel you need an armored car to protect you from that, then by all means...
