In the suburbs, Stevenson High School is far and away the best choice for your friend - in my opinion . Its fairly large enrollment provides a broad spectrum of programs. Your friend's kids are sure to find something they're interested in at Stevenson.
The good news is that at slightly below Stevenson's level, there are a lot of very good high schools in the NW suburbs (where your friend seems to be focusing).
High test scores and high national rankings show not only how effective teachers' methods are; they show how well-planned and effective the curriculum is and how compatible a school's philosophy, mission, and academic policies are with providing a high-level academic experience to ALL students from the struggling to the ultra high achievers.

I do not think that they will be able to find a suitable home in the Stevenson School District. From what I have heard everything is relatively expensive. How are the schools in Wheeling? There seem to be plenty of homes in their range and it is relatively close to the North Shore.

My FIL has been pushing Fox River Grove and Crystal Lake as more affordable options with good schools.

Community High School District includes students from Cary, Crystal Lake, Fox River Grove, Prairie Grove and several other area communities. The district is currently developing an interactive boundary map system. Should you need assistance with boundary maps in the meantime, please use the contact link at the top of this page to request a paper copy. Please be sure to include a mailing address for the map. Alternatively, you may request verification of a particular address through the contact form. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.

Thanks but I've already read that page and I don't want a paper map. Back to my original point, there are plenty of school districts that make no mention of a map at all on their websites, or that have only a district boundary map without the individual school boundaries.

I believe Fremd is rated among the top H.S in the area although all of those HS have decent reputations. Finding a home for under $200,000 may be difficult. Realtor.com usually lists the HS district with a number that can easily be looked up.
