I have lived in Lansing for 30 years, My Town has been going to the dumps, It is currently changing for the worse, now a days, my son cant go through school without being called "Cracker" or Some other epitat like that , not to mention are school system is going too, T.F. South's Test scores are now so bad that they dont pass state standards, and its gone to the point were there going to cut gym for the incoming Freshman. There has been an INCREASE in crime (I have a police scanner) and this really sucks.

All those towns east of Pulaski and south of 135th have been "changing" now for the past 20 years. Sorry, but does this come as a surprise to you? Why do you think towns like Orland and Tinley Park are exploding the way they are? Where do you think all those people are coming from? ... Towns to the east usually. White flight at it's best as usual.

Posts like these are very misleading because they only provide anecdotal evidence, at best. I'm not necessarily disagreeing with the OP, but I'd like to hear more evidence than he's providing. A police scanner and second-hand reports of daily racist name-calling do not prove that "Lansing is going down the dumps".

I live in Lansing as well and have a different perspective. I never hear sirens or gunshots. There are no groups of "thugs" walking around scaring people. I let my children play in the backyard (of course, keeping an eye on them). My family and I frequently go for walks around the neighborhood in good weather. My daughter's elementary school is a good school with excellent parent participation and decent test scores.

Again, I'm not necessarily disagreeing with the OP, but I just don't see this decline in my town. Maybe I live in an area that's untouched so far or maybe the OP is being an alarmist. I don't know, but before I put out my "for sale" sign, I'll gather real evidence.

The OP did not express their concerns or frustrations using the best examples or language, though the general premise that Lansing is worse now that in the past is likely to be correct. I, personally, would agree having lived in the general vicinity for many years.

Default Maybe it's you

In response to the person who wrote the quote below, maybe it's not the area, but you. Let me give you a few examples and maybe you will understand where I am coming from. I too am a resident of Lansing. Before you criticize anyone or group look in the mirror. Your spelling is horrible and your punctuation is not all it is cracked up to be as well. Now, I am not saying that I am perfect, no one is, but before you go spouting off at the mouth about Test Scores, maybe yours were not all that good since I found several errors in your foaming at the mouth below. From the looks of it, it seems that maybe you might have contributed to scores being low (or lower than they would have been) in your day at TF South since the wording below is not that of a very well educated person. However, I do take into consideration that everyone has bad days at the computer, and maybe this was just one of your bad days. It is sad that your child is having problems, but is your child also dishing it out? You didn't say anything about that. It sounds to me that you don't like the people who have been moving into the area. But remember this, when the lights are out, we are all the same color.

Biddy, how long have you lived in Lansing? If you don't mind me asking, what general area do you live in?

I live near Lansing, it is no worse than many other communities. There is much commercialism and thriving Mom/Pop stores. It really agitates me, when people ridicule a community because it's becoming more diverse. "Oh....no, people of color are moving in, now my property value is going to go down, there's going to be abandon buildings, so on and so forth."

There are brand new subdivisions in Lansing with homes that are in the 300K range, and they are occupied. Did any one, ever think that a demise of a community begins with political administration? Businesses start pulling out because of economics. They no longer can supply a demand for their new target audience. Therefore, they leave and go elsewhere, where they will be more fruitful. With that being said, do the mayors/political leaders, offer any incentives when they see this happening? No! Do they offer any incentives for Village Employees, like police officers to stay/live in town. No! They lift residency and all the officers move to Will County and such. They have such a problem living in town, but they don't have a problem working there.

Don't even get me started with the public educational system. Unless, you live in Naperville or send your child to private school....they are pretty much going to receive a watered down education, that will need twicking by parents when they're home. It's funny how the OP, criticized the school her child goes to because he was called a Cracker. I'm from the ole` school as well, I remember when Thornton Fractional South, was predominantly all White. They made racial slurs to people of color all the time. The school administration, never did jack, and the White parents....surely, didn't care! I guess that was okay because it's okay to insult Black people....that's the norm?

Orland Park, Mokena, New Lenox, Tinley....are no big whoop-ti-do. I worked for a decade in those areas. People, are trying to move out, as soon as they moved in....because they can't afford the taxes or better yet their mortgage. Now, they're stuck because the housing market is awful. These communities use to be a golfer's wet dream. They were nothing but plainfields, until investors/franchises and such came in. It was untapped terrority, whereas areas such as Dolton/CalCity/Lansing were tapped-out/saturated.

When are we going to learn as the Human Race, that we need one another socially/economically? No matter what you do, where you go, who you are, there are going to be people of different racial backgrounds/ethnicity/culture. White-Flighters might as well move to the moon, and with that being said we will eventually be there too!

Here is a real situation in a real suburb on the Southwest side (I will not name the suburb), this is one of the real things that causes "white flight" - to be clear, I do know that most reasons for "white flight" are not due to this specific circumstance and the bizarre mortgage market created this situation.

There is a subdivision in a 95% white suburb - homes there start at $600k and go to $1mm or so (I know one of the developers personally so this is factual).

This subdivision (75+ homes) was all white - then had 15 or so black families move in over a 8-12 month period. No big deal, diversity, etc. Well, as of last month, of those 15, 8 are in foreclosure and 4 have not paid property taxes (that is all public record). Crazy, right? I have never heard of anything like that - and neither has the developer. Now he is freaked out when he sees any black person looking there because he has a lot of lots to sell and foreclosures kill property value.

For the record, none of the white people are in foreclosure or are in arrears on taxes.

So, do white people (meaning the neighbors and the developer) wanting to leave/get out or not wanting black people moving in make them racist, or do the circumstances justify it?

I am not saying what is right or wrong because in this situation, I can see both sides. . .

And I do know this same type of situation is happening in other subdivisions across the Southwest burbs to it is not isolated.

Lansing in a nutshell-whites moving out; blacks moving in. Business is moving out, school test scores are going down. If you think Lansing is a nice place to live you are more than likely moving in from the south side of Chicago, if you don't like where Lansing is going you've probably lived her for more than a few years and can see the transition right before your eyes. The white flight was really moving up until the feds gave the axe to the sub prime lending practices. Since that has happened I think the white flight has slowed, as it's harder to get approved for a loan. Lansing housing and property taxes are not cheap.
