If you didn't have to move based on your job and didn't have to live in the Chicago area (city and suburbs), would you still live here or would you move somewhere else?

There are so many places with a nicer climate but if you still have to work and up living in an area with higher costs and longer commutes that really negates the advantage.

Of course there are also more than a few places with weather that is no better than the Chicago region but they offer more options for enjoying the outdoors -- some of them also have fairly modest COL, but relatively thin employment. Not a great trade-off either...

Places that have lower cost of living, better weather and good employment options are rather limited. When I have no family commitments I will probably focus on them.

Doesn't matter. You can be rich, poor, or middle class.

If I could get a job comparable to the one I have now some place with better government and weather I'd be long gone.

I am sure many have moved due to better employment opportunities elsewhere. The weather here is not as bad as far as the extremes, but is so changeable. Move to Florida, get the hurricanes. Move to California, get earthquakes, drought and wildfires.

The weather in the so called nice places have other problems. Also being hot so much of the year is oppressive too. No wildfires, earthquakes, hurricanes and the like here. Employment options, education and medical may not be as good in other places.

If I had unlimited resources, I'd live around here in the summer months since I have friends and the remnants of my family here, and spend the rest of the year in the Carolinas. Which is where I lived before I moved here 26 years ago. Summers are hot, but I'll take a few months of air conditioning over the winter around here any time (some of you may change your mind about that as you get older). Depending on which area you choose in the South, employment, education and medical options can be as good as what you have around here. And you don't have the Chicago Machine to deal with in state politics.
