My husband and I currently live in Houston, TX. He has a job opportunity in Rockford, IL. How far is Rockford from Chicago? What areas do you suggest we look to reside in? We have a budget of $1200; no children; one car. In Houston, we rely heavily on cars. I will go to school to finish my last two years of my chemistry major. My number one priority is safety. Thank you in advance

Rockford is very far from Chicago. It's around 80 miles and 2 and a half hours away. I consider Rockford to be a different metro area than Chicago. I have lived in both areas and don't consider Rockford part of the metro. Luckily, the Rockford area is much cheaper than the Chicago area. You should look at Belvidere, Machesney Park, Cherry Valley, Rockton, or Roscoe.

Whoa that is far. We are used to driving 45 min-1 hour to work, but that's because the traffic is horrible here. Thank you. I will look in to those.

Rockford is not really driving distance for a daily commute to even the most "fringe" suburbs of Chicago -- it is well over 40 miles from Huntley which is about as far NW as you can get from Chicago and still be in an area that is barely a suburb. It would take over 50 minutes in all but the lightest traffic to travel that distance.

Parts of Rockford are OK and others are a little more "worn down". Need more details about your desire to finish chemistry degree too -- I know NIU has a decent enough dept of Chemistry but it too is a probably over an hour away in DeKalb. Not too many places between them either -- maybe Rochelle. Rochelle is kind of "regional farm town" that lately has increased its industry, it probably 15 minutes or so from DeKalb and under 40 minutes from Rockford.

Not sure I would really focus on this job offer in your situation. It would be much easier to have a job closer in to the core suburbs and that would also give more options for you to finish school.

What is important to you beyond "safety"? The demographics of Rockford mostly reflect its heritage as a older manufacturing area...

There's quite a few colleges in and around Rockford. There's Judson, Rockford University, and Beloit College in Beloit WI which is not far from Rockford at all.

Judson is in Elgin which would be a haul if OP has to go to campus more than once or twice a week.

I would think a public university like Northern Illinois University would be more affordable and likely have stronger ties to traditional paths of advancement with ACS but again that really depends on what your ultimate goal is...

I was just researching NIU and they have apartments available for those of us who are 20+, graduate students, and/or married. This school sounds like the best one for me while my husband can drive back and forth to work and help with rent.

The south side of Rockford might be a good bet for you. If you decide to go to Northern Illinois University it will be somewhere between 40-45 minutes, depending upon where you live, with a good part of the trip on I-59.

Rockford has some nice areas. It's often maligned because there is serious crime in some parts of town.

Anywhere on the east or south edge of the city would be fine and conducive to a commute to NIU. Here's a link to a map of the safer areas.
