Ford Heights is not good place to live at all. I was born in Chicago Heights and I know the south surburbs from growing up there 15 years ago, and Ford Heights is still very rough and economically depressed. I would look elsewhere. NSH gave you some good suggestions. Also, if you want to be by Ford Heights (hey, your reasons are your own), I would look in some sections of chicago heights, park forest or Olympia Fields, and definately avoid living in Ford Heights, which back in the 1980's had the reputation of the 'poorest suburb in america' according to a few published articles.

I would not recommend Ford Heights at all--high crime, economically depressed--you would be better off looking elsewhere.

Ditto I got lost going to Indiana and drove too far south and ended up in Ford/Chicago Heights to get gas. It was a little scary and not a very pleasant place. I have a beater of a car so no one minded.
Umm dont know south suburbs too well -- i think Orland/Tinley park is nice, there is stuff off of 55. Park Forest is not bad. The south burbs have seen better days but they are cheap and I assume you are living in them for a job. They are not my first choice for chicago burbs. |

I recommend Naperville, Westchester, Lombard, Elmhurst, Oak Park, Brookfield, LaGrange or Evanston. If you don't have children, would also recommend Berkely or Berwyn. All are commuter-friendly to downtown Chicago.

I wouldn't pick either one! They are both very unsafe, and filled with poverty. The per capita income for Ford Heights is around $8,000! I would try Oak Lawn, or any of the Palos towns.

I wouldn't pick that area. I'd look into New Lenox, Mokena, Frankfort, Tinely Park, Orland Park or look into IND -- Crown Pt, Valpo. |

How much do you want to spend on housing? Where would you be working? Do you have friends/family in Chicagoland? What kinds of things do you like to do in your free time? All these factor into where you should look.
Do you want easy access to downtown Chicago? Or would you rather be able to jump on the highway downstate quickly? Are schools important? Would you be buying or renting? |
