I know that area well, if you can handle a commute go west, such as plainfield, lockport, new lenox, etc.. Better schools, most of the places people have mention before except for homewood flosmoor have some of the worst school systems and are pretty ghetto!

I always just keep driving past it and think why would they let this place look like crap. No Park Forest has some of the worst schools, I wouldnt let my kids go to beacon hill if you paid me a million dollars, trust me you are not missing anything in park forest!

It never ceases to amaze me that we now consider a 200-400,000 house a 'bargain'. How in the world can a person making $10.00 an hr. (before taxes) afford even a 150,000 house?????

They can't. People who make 10/hr should not be looking to buy a house in the Chicago area.

Care to be more specific, such as, provide reasons why people should stay away from Hometown?

Take a look at Park Forest
Park Forest has new homes going up. Energy efficient, affordable -- worth taking a look at. Bigelow Homes is building them.
I would take a second look at Park Forest.
Go here and search for "Bigelow":

yeah, i'd like to know that too. most people don't know anything about Hometown because it is a really small place (less than a square mile) sandwhiched in between Chicago and Oak Lawn.
low property taxes, decent schools, good proximity... the only downside is the average homeowner is on the older side.

You think a $400,000 house is affordable?
