Just my two cents as someone who was in your situation about 5 years ago: eliminating a potential suburb that otherwise meets your main criteria because of the extra 10 minutes or so of highway travel time that you'd spend going to visit friends that themselves will probably be moving to the suburbs in a few years from now is probably not in your best interests.

My own personal tolerance would probably be tested by having to cross the Fox River and its somewhat sparsely laid-out bridges, but if others can't tolerate the extra couple of minutes it takes to get out to Wheaton vs Downers Grove they are really short changing themselves...

Our entire neighborhood commutes to the loop and we are in North Naperville.
