Oh, wait, she's in a car. I forgot. No person has ever been assaulted while driving one of those things.
Show me proof that people on the Southside of Chicago randomly pulls, attacks, rapes, or kills entire families while at a stop sign or red light and I'll recant my statement. Besides that, stop feeding into the OP's paranoia!

Lake Shore Drive has an extension now that could be picked up not to far from the expressway. It's a viable route if you don't want to take the trek from 55th and the Dan Ryan.

As I said earlier, I don't think the OP is in grave danger...but you're being either naive, self-righteous, or overly politically-correct to imply that it isn't a shady area with significant crime. I drive past twice a day. I lived there. I actually knew someone in college who was driving just west of washington park and was murdered. Of course this isn't common but it happened. So the OP is not only reasonable to ask this question but also probably wise to do so.

I'm in agreement with you!

I grew up in West Englewood so I'm very well aware of what bad neighborhoods are capable of. My argument is there is no immediate danger to someone driving through in a car. I'd change my tune if public transportation was the only mode of transportation.

If this were my daughter or son, I would tell them to stay on the expressways and Lake Shore Drive no matter how far out of the way it was. And my daughter would listen. My son, who knows. I grew up in the city and even back then, you stayed on the highways. Why take the chance? Personal safety vs 10 extra minutes of travel time? Come on. Be real.

You can actually take the 90/94 all the way around to lake shore drive. It takes a little back tracking but you'll stay on the expressway the entire time.
