Western burb fanboy here. Defending my comments... I'd of course pick Arlington Heights if I could find a rental I liked. Because of proximity. However, I wouldn't pick Arlington Heights because it's downtown core is stronger than any of the Western towns in question. Because its not.

All that said, the OP asked for more options that are still a tolerable commute from Schaumburg. That's where the Western burbs come in. Palatine's core is worth scoping out, but I imagine its too small for what the OP wants.

Schaumburg is pretty far west, and right off of I-290/I-355. So some western burbs make sense, though the ones just south of Schaumburg aren't particularly nice until you get to Glen Ellyn and Wheaton. Arlington Heights makes the most sense to me for this scenario. Mt. Prospect is nice, but has less going on. And of course Barrington is nice, but not particularly fun for a 20-something without kids.
