First time post to this forum so hello to all. Just moved here and working in the loop. Right now I'm downtown in a temporary apartment but I'm coming from a small town so things are a bit overwhelming right now. I'll be looking to rent a place in the next few months and I'm not sure if city life is for my wife and I. We are planning to have kids soon and wondering if anyone can recommend some good neighborhoods where the commute to the loop isn't too bad. I won't be driving into the city. I'd like to keep the commute to about 45 minutes. After renting for a year or so we may consider buying a place. We don't need or want anything elaborate. Nice comfortable house, a little yard, good neighborhood with some dining/shopping options close by and a easy commute to the city.

Any and all suggestions, comments, feedback is much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

You can rent a brand new townhome in downtown Wheaton with that budget. You'd be walking distance to everything: Mariano's grocery store, outdoor French market, ice cream shops, coffee shops, tea shop, restaurants, niche shopping, parks and playgrounds, gym, concert bandshell, dry cleaners, nature preserve, library, a micro brewer, the Illinois Prairie Path, festivals, parades, and of course Metra. Express trains to and from the Loop take any where from 34 to 45 minutes.

If you eventually decide to stay and buy in the neighborhood, the local elementary school consistently ranks as one of the best in the state:

How close if your office to the various train stations? If you have a 15 minute walk from the office to your train, that will limit how far out you can live.

There are a lot of towns that would work for the OP. I would recommend looking at the metra schedules (Metra Mobile) to figure out how much of a commute will work. Then look at the towns along those train lines.

On the UP-West line there are a lot of options; Elmhurst, Glen Ellyn and Wheaton come up a lot around here. There are also lots of good options along the BNSF line, but the towns closer in on that line are a little more expensive. The UP-Northwest line has Arlington Heights and Mt. Prospect, which are also nice towns.

There are also nice single family homes in your budget if you want more space.

This one is right across the street from the Prairie Path and it's not that far from downtown Wheaton: 25W729 Electric Ave, Wheaton, IL 60187 is For Rent | Zillow

Also, look in Glen Ellyn and Downers Grove. There are also parts of Lisle are in the Downers Grove schools and parts that are in the Naperville 203 schools. Look in those parts of Lisle and also look at the parts of Westmont that are in the Downers Grove schools and another part that are in the Hinsdale school district for HS. Also, look in the parts of Willowbrook and Burr Ridge that are in the Hinsdale school district.

I think the fastest morning express train from Glen Ellyn is 37 minutes, and that's on a good day with no "switching problems" (stops in Glen Ellyn, Elmhurst, and then the Loop--that's it!). I think Wheaton has one that's actually a few minutes faster, in spite of being further out. But a door-to-door commute under 45 minutes will be tough unless you live and work really close to the train or pick a really close suburb like Oak Park (I've had the Metra ride there take 13 minutes, even though it's scheduled for something like 17).

That house is bit goofy. And those photos are terrible. I sometimes wonder how realtors get work when they turn out photos like that on a listing. It's like they are intentionally bad. It's 2015. Photos sell houses.
