I'm interested in living in one of these three areas, or perhaps somewhere near that area. I work in Schaumburg, and I'm from the suburbs, so I get the "feel" of these towns, but just looking for some details. Which specific schools are best? Are any neighborhoods more family friendly? We're looking for a big house with a yard for around $400,000. Are taxes lowes in any of these towns?

Barrington. Or the part of Hoffman Estates that falls into Barrington School District.

Barrington would be my first choice, but it's also the most expensive. For your budget you could get about a 2000 sq ft house with a $400k budget. Also add Palatine to your list. Schools are good and you could get a nice house for your budget. I would also look at the part of Hoffman Estates that are in the Barrington school district like the poster above suggested and the parts of Rolling Meadows that are in the Palatine school district. You could even look into Rolling Meadows too, it's affordable and schools are not too bad.

Streamwood is also next door, and I am enjoying the town quite a bit thus far.

To answer your question about taxes I just went through 31 listings that are currently active or just sold between $395-405k in those three villages. Taxes ranged from approximately $6000 all the way up to almost $12,000. Each zip code seemed to have some in the lower range as well as some in the higher range.
So, in summary, I could not find a definitive way to say "this town has lower taxes than that town."
