Default Consider elsewhere?

As mentioned, the problems with the three you mentioned are

Geneva: Most affordable, but too far for a commute, lots of time lost and gas $, now that gas is $4 a gallon.

Western Springs: Not affordable, $350k will buy you something on Wolf Road (a busy street) or something tiny that needs lots of work. It is not fun being the poorest housewise in a neighborhood that is going teardown, no matter what anyone says (been there).

La Grange: probably the best choice of the three, but some affordability issues still.

Why not look at La Grange Park, La Grange Highlands, Downers Grove, or Elmhurst? If your looking for newer, south Downers Grove could fit your criteria, but if you are looking for cute (all three towns you mentioned seem to indicate that) then I think central Downers or Elmhurst. Both have the upside that teardowns are happening ( meaning that there is appreciation potential ) but are still more affordable and closer to your husband's job.
