A couple surprises for me - like Lake Zurich (#12) being higher than I thought, and Buffalo Grove ranked lower at #27..
Also, Deerfield, Libertyville, Vernon Hills not being on the list. Not sure about the methodology used.

I do not agree with either the focus on "pure" ordinal ranking nor their methodology, but they do spell it out -- http://www.newsweek.com/methodology-...gs-2015-363698

Quote:
College Enrollment Rate—25 percent
Graduation Rate—20 percent
Weighted AP/IB/Dual Enrollment composite—17.5 percent
Weighted SAT/ACT composite—17.5 percent
Student Retention (change in student enrollment between 9th and 12th grades; this measure is intended to control for dropout rates)—10 percent
Counselor-to-Student Ratio—10 percent
I have no idea why they give 10% weight to Counselor to Student ration, not even sure if that has ever been studied...

There is some controversy over how Newsweek uses just AP/IB "enrollment" and not success, as the more valid US New & World Report uses, but at least there is some correlation with that data and it has been studied as an indicator of kids at least being exposed to college level rigor...

Here is a another useful tool in determining which high schools are preparing their students for college in IL.

Of particular interest is the high school specific freshman year of college GPA's at University of IL Champaign, and then generally, the GPA's of a high school's college freshman at all of the public universities in IL.

The first table starts on page 13.

Any IL HS ranking that doesn't include Hinsdale Central doesn't seem worth much to me.

True. The Newsweek rankings really don't amount to a hill of beans anyway.

cheers
