College of Dupage - searching for an apartment
my boyfriend and i are moving to illinois from new jersey in mid-may. he will be playing football at the college of dupage. since we will not be able to see our apartment before we move in, it has made the search very hard. we are looking for a 1 bed/1 bath apartment in a good neighborhood close too the college, (we dont want a long commute) and in the price range of $600-850 a month. we are 19 years old (and college students remind you) so we do not need the most luxurious apartment, but we would prefer one that is not run down and old and dirty. im not sure what the good areas and good apartment builings are out there, so any help and information would be greatly appreciated

Glen Ellyn Apartments for Rent with Ratings & Reviews by Glen Ellyn Renters at ApartmentRatings.com
You probably saw this already and it doesn't seem that the reviews are all that great. As far as safety is concerned, I wouldn't worry about that in Glen Ellyn. You are very safe in Glen Ellyn, Wheaton, Lombard and most all of DuPage County. If the rent is very cheap there is probably a reason, so be careful there. You will get what you pay for in the long run. I don't know if I would ever rent something without coming to see it first unless it was a month-by-month lease that I could get out of quickly. It may be worth the drive hear to check things out.

Definitely check out the places before you sign a lease. There are many gorgeous apartments in the Wheaton area, and many are very close to COD. Id make the trip out here and see what you can find.

yea i did see that but thank you. its so hard to decide on an apartment without seeing it, we're trying to fly out there sometime soon we just might not have the extra money. some apartments i have looked into seem nice on paper but then i'll look at reviews and theyre horrible. anyone know anything about the glenlake club apartments in glendale, the covington in lombard, or the prarie path apartments in wheaton? and how far away are woodridge and naperville? they seem to have nice apartments for a pretty good price

I dont know anything about those apartments, but a quick search of the Covington in Lombard and Prairie Path in Glen Ellyn look pretty decent. I see that Prairie Path is "walk to train and near downtown Glen Ellyn", which is a lovely area. But for real, youd really have to check the place out for yourself. Doing it over the internet just doesnt seem right.
Have you checked out Amli in Wheaton?

I would stay away from Glendale Heights if you are not going to come see the places. There have been some issues there with gangs and crime. I am not saying all of the area is bad, but I have seen some things in the news and in the papers from that area more than others.

Well, Glendale Heights does have some problem areas, but its not really that bad at all. I wouldnt want to personally live there, but I have a friend in GH and his family has been there for 15 years and they love it. Theyre on a golf course, but hey. Not the whole town is bad, and even the "bad" parts are hardly anything to be scared about. They do have some gang problems, but its still a decently quiet area.

If I could jump in to respond to the Glendale Heights slam real quick....
Certainly Glen Ellyn, Wheaton, and Lombard are nicer than Glendale Heights, but there are nice, safe areas of GH. Glendale Heights is what I like to call a "stepping stone" town, with a lot of middle-income and immigrant families who are moving up from less desirable towns. I grew up in Bloomingdale just north of GH, went to middle school in GH, and have friends all over the town. The "gangs and crime" label may have had some truth to it in the 80's but these days it's not a bad place to live if you're looking for more affordable housing in that area.
For an apartment though I would definitely check it out in person first. That's true everywhere.
