I was an infant in an attached single-family, or a townhome as we like to call them now. It was perfectly fine. There are a lot of young children living in apartments, condominiums, and attached housing. These places were built for families and you should not be able to hear neighbors. If you do, it is a poorly constructed building. Many of my older friends who are married are choosing to live in apartments and condominiums with dogs and children for the location and schools. Many really value the proximity to the lakefront and all that Evanston and Chicago have to offer. It is something to think about, but with your budget and tolerance for a fixer-upper you should be able to find that house with patience and a good agent.
