It's actually about 5 miles to King Drive, on the other side of the Ryan. Perceptions of distance have nothing to do with this. The whole point is an implication was made that gang members might wander over the border into Evergreen Park from King Drive. No gang member is going to go for a five mile stroll into Evergreen Park.

Let me add my .02. I use to live in Oaklawn from 2001 to 2003. There are some racist people who live there in Oaklawn. One man told me to go back home. Ummm, this is my home. We heard a few comments here and there. What really got me,there was a house I wanted. So I made a bid for it. Now when the owner found out who I was she told me no,she will not sell me the house for the neighborood sake. I found another house. Now few months later my realtor told me the house that told me no, sold for 25k less than my bid.

There are gang members in Evergreen park for those who think there isn't.

Absolutely, at least passing through. Immediately north in Ashburn, they've had gang problems for several years. There is still no reason to worry about what is going on on King Drive though.

Ugh, man. Racism like that makes me so angry!!!! That woman was a total redneck hick. At least she got what she deserved when she sold her house for less money, and Oak Lawn is much better off without her and her racism. I wish I would've been alive long enough to see all traces of racism like that being a thing of the past.

Slowly but surely things are changing. The white population in Oak Lawn is now less then 90% (around 87%, per the 2007 Census estimate). We now have two African American churches and one Hispanic church in town. I'm also seeing more black and Latino homeowners (not just renters or condo owners) in the village. We also have an ever increasing number of Mexican restaurants, and several Middle Eastern grocery stores. Oak Lawn Community High School is only 77% white and Richards HS is just 57% white ( http://iirc.niu.edu/SearchResult.asp...lawn&type=CITY). Oak Lawn is well on it's way to becoming a not so homogenous community anymore.

Sweet! That's great news! I'm very happy to hear that, cause my dad's family is from Oak Lawn from the neighborhood bordered by 103rd street in the north, 106th street in the north, and in between Central ave and Cicero. Right by Beggar's Pizza. My dad also went to Richards High School.

Richards is only 57% white because kids are bussed in from Alsip, Robbins, Calumet Park, etc. and it's not just Oak Lawn south of 99th Street and Chicago Ridge providing the school's population.

Kids in the suburbs you mention would not get bussed to Richards unless by special request. They would be at Eisenhower or Shepard.

Back to the title of the thread, Evergreen Park is a lovely choice for those choosing to raise children. The neighborhoods are usually very quiet, you can walk to anything such as school, church, a friend's house, ice cream parlor, etc. I have heard from a friend of mine that north of the tracks to 87th is bad. I can clearly tell you the architecture of each home is very charming. The majority of older homes from the 20s and earlier are between the tracks and 95th Street. The more modern homes from the 30s, 40s, and 50s are south of 95th. The area always brings back such lovely memories of the past. Trust me, Evergreen Park is nice.
