I am trembling with rage right now as I read that Cook County has voted to double the county sales tax in lieu of cutting patronage jobs and other waste. What makes this so infuriating is that unlike in most other states, we can't say, well, we'll vote them out at the next election. We have no more say in who our government leaders are then they do in China. If we did, Todd Stroger wouldn't even be president right now. Anyone know any good sources to learn how people people cope living in dictatorships?

Yeah, I was moaning about this in the Chicago portion of the boards. I'm really sick of these guys, and fighting against them (which I've tried via the political process), it is insane. Chicago is going to have a 10.25% sales tax as a result of their incompetence. I worry about the future of this city.

I live in Cook County, a few blocks from Lake-Cook Road. Can you guess where I shop?

I have also had 3 relo stints in the NY tri-state area. It's common for people to shop in Jesey to avoid sales tax. Clothing purchases are not taxed in NJ. NYC occasionally hosts no sales tax dates to increase bsuiness.

I have traveled a lot in Northern Europe. It's quite common for people in Scandinavian countries to take a long ferry boat ride to other countries to avoid taxes.

I'm on the near-northwest side (about two miles from the LOOP) with no car (can't afford one either). I wish I had that option.

Looks like I'm just going to have to suck it up and pay. Even if I did have a car, I'd have to drive so far and battle so much traffic that I'd probably lose any sort of savings paying for the gas to get there.

If this man wins relection I will move out of Cook County. I still cannot believe the millions of people that were stupid enough to vote for him. I saw this coming a mile away.

A very foolish and expensive decision. If I don't end up moving out of state, I'm going to be looking into moving out of Cook County.

Yep - you know this is going to hit the working poor the most!! Those who can't afford the cars to drive out of the city and avoid the taxes.
