Crystal Lake schools are not as desirable as other NW suburbs like Barrington or Arlington Heights...
They may be thinking of the Jefferson Park stop on the UP-NW line. It is connected to the Blue Line station. But that would be unworkable since the Jeff Park station is a local stop and taking a local train from Crystal Lake all the way into the city would be maddening. None of the express trains (which would be a must from Crystal Lake) stop there. Plus you would be going well past O'Hare and then back tracking.

Google Transit can provide transit times and the best UPNW Metra stop to get off at to transfer to the blue line, which will go to O'Hare.

I just plugged the information in and Google Transit says to take the UPNW Metra to Irving Park stop, walk to CTA blue line and you will arrive at O'Hare. I've done it and found it to be simple. It has been awhile, but I'm pretty sure it has an exit that was at the actual airport (O'Hare).

That is even worse than Jefferson Park. Irving Park is even further into the city than Jeff Park and is also just a local stop. So you would be backtracking even further (going about 10 miles past O'Hare and then going back). Just not a workable option from Crystal Lake on a local train - unless you have all the time in the world.
