Glencoe is actually pretty diverse. I am an african-american resident and there are around 200 of us in a town of under 9,000.

You may want to consider Northbrook, Glenview and Deerfield as well, although they are not "on the lake", considering your price range you are going to have to live a little bit away from the lake anyway... these towns are just one town over from the lake. Lake Bluff may have some property in your price range and is on the lake. none of these towns are very diverse though outside of Asians and Jews.

Yeah, but Evanston is very segregated. The only way the races come together is at school and there is only one school devoted to the predominately african american area. So they bus african americans and hispanics all around town. The high school is very divided and many people say it is pretty racist.

Well, there are some Asian residents and it is about 50/50 Jewish - Christian/Catholic. There are also some hispanic people who work at the grocery store to wash your car when you are inside the store. I am sure they are not residents but the are here.

Steve-o You should check your info before you make some of your recomendations. Wheaton diverse? I hardly thing so. Just look at the statistics right off of this site"

Races in Wheaton:
  • White Non-Hispanic (87.5%)
  • Hispanic (3.7%)
  • Black (2.8%)
  • Asian Indian (1.4%)
  • Two or more races (1.3%)
  • Other race (1.0%)
  • Chinese (0.9%)
  • Vietnamese (0.8%)
  • Korean (0.6%)
  • Other Asian (0.5%)

I would hardly say it is diverse. I would think that if these people want to find somewhere diverse their best choices are in the city. I have not seen anyplace in the suburbe that is diverse where the people actually do anything besides tolerate each other. In fact, in most suburbs peopls don't tolerate each other in general. My sister lives in Hyde Park and if you want a diverse population that gets along and doesn't have problems with each other, this may be the place.
If you want to make friends with people in the neighborhood the suburbs are not the place. Unless you call saying "Hi" and waving friends friends.

Hyde Park:
DemographicsWhite
Black
Hispanic
Asian
Other43.5%
37.7%
4.11%
11.3%
3.39%

Being a mixes couple, areas like this in the city will be your best bet as long as you can tolerate the congestion.
