Again, if you go far north on the lake (e.g. Waukegan, Zion, Beach Park) it becomes very diverse. I suggested the neighboring town, Gurnee, because it is a safe area w/better schools. It is still diverse and very close to the lake. Check it out.

I agree. But I hardly think those towns are considered the North Shore.

Who called these towns the North Shore? Certainly not me. The OP never asked for the North Shore. They wanted to be close to the lake and in diverse communities. Gurnee meets almost all of their criteria (except quaint downtown).

I did not really state you said they were the North Shore. But the North Shore was eluded to earlier without a definition of what is the North Shore. I wanted to keep things clear for the OP. That is all.

The North Shore is about as far from diverse as you can get - and the South Shore is nice in the city (South Loop and Hyde Park), but farther south is not so nice.

i'm not sure i agree with that entirely. granted, there are BY FAR more diverse areas besides the north shore, but i think there are parts of it that are not completely white.

the problem with gurnee is that it is more than 45 minutes away from downtown during rush hour. the commute would kill us. thanks for the suggestion, though!

yes, just to clarify, we are looking for a north shore property. the proximity to the lake is important to us.

can anyone weigh in on the diversity of highland park? i know it's predominantly white, but isn't there a hispanic population from neighboring highwood?

You can be 45 minutes and by the lake if you go north or south along the lake!

South- Hyde Park has beautiful housing, but it part of Chicago Public Schools.

North- Evanston is diverse as a city, but I'm not sure how integrated the different racial groups are. I've heard mixed things about the schools. From what I've heard, they're very segregated, but it would be easy to find that our for sure online. Evanston is a very beautiful place with a totally redeveloped downtown. You can take the El into Chicago easily. I think the Metra goes through also. I'd move to Evanston, but I don't have as much money to spend on a house

Any further north from Evanston, you're talking a lot of money. However, Waukegan is cheaper and very diverse. It definitely does not have the status of the other northshore suburbs.

Expect more than a 45-50 minute commute going from Highland Park to the city during rush hour. Evanston is probably your best choice.
