i actually checked that out, wages are about 10% less, and the cost of living is about 25% less, meaning that it's about 15% cheaper than NY. ive heard that it's s little more comfortable financially to live there, which doesn't surprise me.

Well considering New York is the most expensive city in the United States, you could have picked anywhere else at random and it still would have been cheaper. So no, it should not come as a surprise

yess, it is. i just love chicago because from what i could see, it has all the same things as new york for the most part (commuter rail road, massive suburbs, city nearby) for a little less money.

Another way to look at it:
nyc = 24 hour city
chicago = ~20 hour city
those 4 extra hours are gonna cost you dearly

A 20-hour city is almost a 24-hr city, but not quite. Pretty good description for Chicago.

"A 3-bedroom, 1 story in long island, on average, is gonna be 400K and up."
Yeah - Hinsdale, Elmhurst, and certain north shore communities are about this price range... and then people buy them and tear them down for that much $$ (or more - we saw a $900,000 teardown). but this has slowed of recent.
Cheap just depends on where you are in chicagoland. I believe the Midwest is generally cheaper than either of the coasts.

More like our landlords here are dumb enough here not to all ban together and all start hiking up the rents so to say the way they do over there. NYers are not stupid because they are paying so much in rent and purchase price, the fact is, the moment you are even thinking of moving out of your apartment in NY, there is already a line of people a mile long waiting for your place, so naturally it will go to the highest bidder. I was in NY in 2007 and remember picking up "The Daily News" to see an ad for a 1 CAR GARAGE, A ONE CAR mind you, no house attached to it, just a garage in Manhattan going for $300,000! And you know what? I'll bet it sold.

Yeah, but there are plenty of places that run 24 hours in Chicago.
