We are looking on-line for an all-day daycare or preschool for our son who will be three by the time we move to (probably) South Evanston. I am finding that most places don't have space, charge a fee just to get on the waiting list, (I mean the YMCA charges $250 just to be on their list, and there probably wouldn't even be a space for our son!) and monthly fees are $1000+. We are moving early July, and registration for most places are already closed, but I can't pick a school for him on-line. I would have to see the place and there is no possibility of me going to Chicag earlier than July, (we live overseas.)

Help! Any ideas???

If you think that is expensive, then just call a downtown day care. The figure quoted will make you feel much better about a mere $1000/mo

Day care is expensive almost anywhere. It is one thing I think people should consider before having children.

I would take a look at The French School in Winnetka, Roycemore School in Evanston, and Childtime Day Care in Evanston. Childtime is where many workers at St. Francis Hospital place there children. They have a nice property and it is on a quiet street next to a park. It is in South Central Evanston on the east side of the campus and on Austin Street.

You might also want to look in to some at home licensed day cares. There are some of them where I live and they seem to be run by caring, compentent and licensed mothers. My library actually had a booklet of all the daycares in my area (Schaumburg).

Oh, sorry but most of the ones that I metioned are at least $6,000 for a half-day per 9 months. Many North Shore daycares close during the summer. I believe that Childtime does not though.

Hence the reason we chose to have one parent stay home. The leftover income after paying for daycare was not worth the extra daily stress and shuttling required.

If day care is around $9,000 for 9 months. The leftover income was not worth the daily stress and shuttling?

Depends how much the parent who gave up their job was making. If I had kids right now it would definitely make sense to stay at home rather than work and pay for daycare (which is very often even more than 9k for 9 months in the city) since I don't make a lot.

... Hence why I'm not ready for kids haha!

Yep, and add to that commuting costs, costs of work clothes, etc. and unless you make a lot of $$$, the $$$ left over after paying all these things is often not much. That's why I left my job when my son was born. Now I babysit another child full time and the company I used to work for occasionally gives me free lance jobs which I do from home. When all is said and done I end up at about the same place I would if I worked out of the home full time and payed for daycare. Daycare is crazy expensive, and its even worse if you have multiple children.
