Will Some Suburbs Secede from Cook County?
There's talk of some Cook County border towns trying to secede from the county due to the sales tax increase. I've heard that Palatine and Schaumburg are investigating this. Do you think these towns (or others) could actually get enough Cook County voter approval for this? Do you think these towns should be absorbed into neighboring counties? Or should they start a new county? Just curious about your thoughts on this....

I'm surprised Orland and Tinley Park don't go to Will County with all the reliance on retail and the competition that Lockport and New Lenox both are putting on the towns. New Lenox for instance is working on a mega mall that will dwarf Orland Square and be comparable to Gurnee Mills. That will finish off Orland Square for sure as it is already dead. I live in Orland Park, but if the mega mall out there opens up with it's lower taxes and better shopping, I will spend my $$$ there. Sorry Orland.

There's been talk in the past of this happening. It'll never happen.

The city should just be in it's own la-la world. All the collar burbs should secede.

Yes.
OR ... the suburbs that stay should get more of the city "perks" that come with all that extra taxation. Like being able to go to our library and check out passes to the museums. Or using city park programs. Or the bungalow revitalization program.

They were saying on NBC that it would cost them untold millions to set up a county government and build all the necessary buildings, thereby negating for the foreseeable future any tax savings. I don't know if that's all the way true, but it's an interesting thought.

I guess it depends on the spin the news source wants to put on it. The station I watched said that Palatine or Schaumburg already had a town hall large enough to house county offices.

If that would be the case they might as well be annexed then.

There will be a non-binding referendum on the ballot in Palatine in April 2009 about this. Senator Matt Murphy has introduced the legislation in Springfield.
Unfortunately, the businesses in Crook County don't get a vote on this. But a 25% increase in property taxes in one year is nothing more than a crime. The Tax Assessor can asses random tax rates for areas they want to attract business's to. Rates on the south side of the city are half of what they are on the north side, same business, same size property, even same occupation. Property taxes on businesses in the northern areas of the county are killing us and forcing us out of business.
Please vote yes, to get out of Cook County and out from under oppressive and unfair property taxes.
Who do you think pays for all these things? The consumer. Now we have to charge our customers 10.25% tax. We have to raise our prices to cover the 25% tax increase in property taxes and most likely will have to lay off workers to compensate. We all suffer because of Cook County's tax cap on residents homes. They sock it to the businesses who then have no choice but to pass on the costs, or close the business.
Vote in April, make your voice known and heard. Support change and don't vote these crooks in again. We get the government we deserve by being apathetic and not taking the time to learn the issues and then vote.
