hazel crest area
Hi my daughter and I are thinking of buying a house in hazel crest, but the neighborhoods that we drive around in seem empty, lots of for sale signs, can anyone give me some info on that area and surronding suburbs. Is it a good place to by a first home? Is the crime rate high or low? Are the schools any good? Or should I just keeping on truckin?
looking to close soon, hurry
Thanks in advance

steer clear
I would stay away from a home purchase in that area. I have long time family ties to Hazel Crest, and at one time it was a nice, quiet little suburb. From everything I hear these days it's gone down hill. There's a reason for all those for sale signs!

If you want a good school, stay south of 183rd st where you'll be in the Homewood-Flossmoor school district. Anywhere else, the schools are awful, I'm sorry to say.

Hazel Crest -- looking to move
I was wondering if anyone has any recent information on Hazel Crest. I am looking to move West on 184th Street which places me in the Homewood-Flossmoor school district. The area is beautiful, but I'm more concerned about Hazel Crest as a whole and why are the taxes so high? Any feedback is appreciated.

Yes, people are movin on out when it comes to Hazel Crest. Don't get me wrong, Hazel Crest is a very pretty area; lots of tree lined streets and plenty of nice old homes, but the caliber of some of what is moving into the area is pretty bad. Many of the people moving into that neighborhood are straight outta da hood it seems, so yes the area is "changing" unfortunantly. Not meaning that one certain race it is changing to is bad, just the type of people it is drawing in unfortunantly isn't the greatest (ie, gangs, druggies, alchoholics, ex cons, etc.)
There are plenty of other areas I would recommend to look at if your heart is set on the south side. Maybe Homewood, Flossmoor, Oak Forest, Olympia Fields, Tinley Park, Frankfort, and even surprisingly East Hazel Crest is nice in parts and still pretty safe.

I think the property taxes are high because of a lack of large businesses. Other than Mi-Jack I don't know what there is besides small stores. Where you are, the crime should be low and like you said you're in a great school district and handy to (Homewood and Country Club Hills) shopping so if you like it, go for it!

Flossmoor
But, I agree - I'd look at Homewood and Flossmoor - if you are diligent you can find affordable housing there.
