Rate Assisted Living in Chicago & Burbs?
Can anyone out there give me a referral on ratings for Assisted Living in the city and north shore? I'm afraid my mom may need to go into one of these places soon and I've heard such horror stories, I really want to make sure she is safe.
Thanks

Rate Assisted Living
Thanks. Well, we currently live in Skokie, but I think we'd really apply to any place with a good reputation. I just don't know where to look to find out how good they are.

When i had [well, my uncle and myself] had to put my Gram into a Nursing Home [she's 91] 5-6yrs ago.... we got a list of places from the county.
I know a nursing home is not the same as assisted living ... but maybe check to see if the county has any sort of list of homes.
It was very helpful to us.

The states website has a link to license violations and survey results. Try looking there.

I know a place out west in Sandwich, but that is way too far for you. My suggestion is the same as the posters above: call your county health dept to ask for an elder care providers list. Make appt for site tour and go check it out one by one. Talk to the staff and watch them work. Look at and smell the place. It is normal to have a whiff of amonia smell in an assisted living or nursing home, but if it is strong, it is a bad sign.
Good luck.

If your work place has an EAP (Employee Assistance Program) it can help you with information and facilities to help you make a decision.

the Pres. Home In Evanston is very very good. They have a waiting list however. If she needs minimal assistance, the North Shore in Evanston would be great.
there is a new place in Lincolnshire, but I forget the name. If you google "lincolnshire" and "assisted living" it will pop up. The Lincolnshire place is superpricy though.
