Hi, We are looking for a gated community in the Long Grove area. We have visited Wynstone in North Barrington and love the vibe but it is SO far from 94. How does the Royal Melbourne community compare to Wynstone? Thanks

I've never lived in either, but I am relatively familiar with both of them. Wynstone is the more beautiful Club and course. The homes are also generally more architecturally pleasing. Wynstone is divided between Barrington and Lake Zurich schools—both highly reputable, but not enjoying the bold-faced name of Stevenson, the 3rd largest high school in Illinois. Wynstone was on the verge of bankruptcy some years ago and is now owned by a consortium of homeowners. The consortium has tried to prop up the struggling local housing market and Club by offering promotional buy-ins to the Club. Royal Melbourne has all of the pros and all of the cons of being in Long Grove. The taxes are significantly higher than those in North Barrington, but the location is more convenient for most people, and Stevenson's reputation is hard to beat. Please be careful and think long and hard about investing in one of these communities. They are less expensive to buy into but more expensive to remain a part of.

Thank you so much for your reply. Every community/club is going to put their best face forward and it is hard to tell what they are really like.

Are you moving locally, coming from the City, or elsewhere?

It seems Wynstone has a Facebook group for residents. Should you have Facebook, you could try and get approved to join the group. That might provide an insider point of view into what living in the subdivision is like.

They do not approve people who haven't purchased yet.

I know some subdivision/town groups have different rules for those interested in moving there, so I figured it would be worth the shot. Nevertheless, I'm not surprised!
