I believe you mean the other side of 290 via the Emory St. overpass. Elmhurst does not to my knowledge extend east of 294...

Toronto. Vis is an excellent community. Since we are so happy with Dist 205 public education. We joined the parish outside and send our children to the religious education program after school. I did weigh public vrs. private. Private in the area can't hold a candle to the resources the public schools have for the children. Take a tour off all facilities in person to weigh options.

If you are looking for a safe, family-friendly area, I think no matter where you go in Elmhurst you wil find that. Your kids will love Berens Park. If you are north of North Ave. also check out Queen of Peace (I think they have a school?). There is an active MOMs Club, and also the Newcomers and Neighbors Association (I might be getting the name wrong). The library is amazing, the park district also (the gymnastic center is in berens Park). Google the Elmhurst Memorial Library and the Elmhust Park District. There are so many parks, plus the Prairie Path goes through the south part of Elmhust.
