I would say that if you are in Algonquin to go to the Crystal Lake Metra station (or Pingree Rd. also in Crystal Lake) its easy parking at takes about an hour and twenty min. to get into the city. Crystal Lake has a festival around fourth of July called "Gala Festival" they have bands play, local food, and its on the lake. Algonquin commons along Randall Road is a nice shopping area and there seems to be a new store everyday. Hope this helps a little.

There is also Medieval Times, the Renaissance Fair, Six Flags Great America, Gurnee Mills, Chain O' Lakes, Algonquin Commons (and all shopping along Randall Road), Woodfield Mall, etc, etc. Your best bet is to pick up a Illinois tourism book from the state. Sooooo much to do that your head will spin. Ive been here 30 years and have covered maybe 2% of all the activities in the area. lol
