help find safe area to rent along I 88 (Chicago, Aurora: apartment complex, for rent)

I will be temporarily relocating to Chicago from California to help a dear friend. I am an older fem. and have a large dog and some birds and I am looking for an older (doesn't have to be) neighborhood where it is safe to go out walking with my dog who will go nuts without reg. exercise. While I am there, I will be traveling back and forth from western Aurora to East of Avondale close to 94. I want to rent something for $1200 or less with 2 bedrooms. I will go smaller if I have to. I don't really care about night life or entertainment and with what I have to do I will be doing a lot of moving things around and driving. I am looking for neighborhoods that might work. I love the idea of the idea of living in beautiful old buildings maybe half way between the two locations. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I have never been to Chicago.

Would you want to rent an apartment? Home? I would recommend some apartments that allow dogs, but only small dogs.

I would rent whatever I can find. I expect to be coming there first part of July so I don't really have that much time. My dog is 55 pounds not small.

I do not know where Avondale near I94 is but I do know where Aurora is. My suggestion is the apartment complex on Maple, across from Four Lakes of Lisle (anyone remembers the name of the complex? It was Shadowood; not sure what it is now.) Or you could rent a small home for about that price. I know there are houses for rent in Boulder Hill in Montgomery, usually 2- 3 bedrooms, for roughly that price.
