I think this migration pattern chart really sums up my general point about the types of people moving to NWI
https://migrationpatterns.org/ Yes, there are always individuals moving everywhere however this chart shows the migration patterns to and from by area broken out by income distribution. The #1 place everyone below the 80th percentile is northwest Indiana. However, for those with incomes in the 80th percentile (approximately > $130k/year) and above, NWI isn't even listed as a top destination.
I think it might feel like there are more Illinois people moving to NWI than there actually are because it's the #1 place where new out-of-state residents to NWI are from at all income levels. So it makes sense why so many people personally know a person from IL who moved there.
