Beautiful suburban community on the North Shore, large Jewish population, access to New Trier HS district, easy commute to Deerfield/Northbrook (job corridor), easy commute to Chicago via 94, Metra or simply driving down Sheridan Road all the way to Lake Shore Drive to Chicago when traffic is hairy on 94 (Edens). Quite expensive, but probably worth it if you can afford it.

Also worth mentioning is the fact that Glencoe is the northernmost community in Cook County that sits along the Lake Michigan lakefront. As soon as you get north of Lake-Cook Road and cross into Highland Park you leave Cook County and enter Lake County. But the North Shore to be technical stretches all the way from Evanston to Lake Bluff. Half of it lies within Cook County (Evanston, Wilmette, Kenilworth, Winnetka, Glencoe, and inland towns like Glenview & Northbrook), half of it lies within Lake County (Highland Park, Lake Forest, Lake Bluff, and inland towns like Deerfield, Highwood, etc.).

City/Glencoe?
I also recently became a single mother, four years ago, and I understand how nothing feels quite right. I just read your original post re raising kids in the city. Glencoe is a lovely suburb. I stayed in the city, however, and have lived here for 17 years, raised both my children here; one is now in college and commutes, the other is 15. I think the CPS is a bust, including the magnet schools, which I feel are very inconsistent; I've checked into them all. They CPS does not compare academically or on safety issues with the private schools in Chicago. So far, the city is still working for us, but it is rather intense at times. The cultural advantages and proximity to museums has been very important to us. I do know a woman who raised 2 daught's in Glencoe and the family is very happy to be there, though it's expensive (but so is the city). New Trier is a plus, but it depends on the student; I guess you aren't to the HS point yet. It seems like a long haul to the city from GLencoe, when we visited, and I think adopting a lifestyle around Glencoe will work well. Good luck to you.

Well, I dare say Whitney Young is just as good of a school as New Trier.

Nt/cps
Possible same "page" as NT, but far more social challenges....different ones, but I feel it all depends on the student. Some individuals are capable of handling the melting pot....and others melt. YOu have to look at the individual "child" not only as a student, but at their very human traits, positives and negatives, as apply to any situation. Academically, I feel there are more opp's at NT, however.
The racial tensions within CPS are palpable to anyone who walks thru the door. Handling it can be a real life tool, very positive, but there ARE those who are not ready to tackle this issue for various reasons at that age, and they may falter under the pressure....at the end the day, the primary purpose of school is to learn academics. Some kids are too distracted and/or stressed by the other issues to reach their academic potetial. This can be true of NT (huge, competitive, average students fall thru cracks, $$) also.

This might be an unpopular opinion but I think kids go to school just as much to learn how to socialize and be a part of the human race as they do to learn academics.
In a perfect world you could have both simultaneously.
