Moving to Lake County...Grayslake?? Lakemoor??
I have lived in the NW suburbs of Chicago my entire life, but I have been considering purchasing a home in either Lakemoor or Grayslake. I am a first time home buyer who works in Buffalo Grove. Does anyone know about the commute, schools, or safety? I am really looking for some advice. Anything would be help.... Thanks!!!

REPLY: I live 5 mins north of Grayslake. Train runs on the outer edge of Grayslake and you have to catch it near Routes 137 and 45 which is on the outskirts of Grayslake and Libertyville. The Village of Grayslake has spent a ton of money on improving the downtown area with fancy brick roads and its had a bit of a facelift. All i know of the schools is that ALOT of your taxes go to them ; ive had quite a few folks complain about the property taxes of Grayslake. Traffic congestion from 4-6:30 pm is a nightmare on Route 83, the main road thru Grayslake , as is Route 45 . Cant tell you much about Lakemoor except its a tiny town and alot further to Buffalo Grove .

Focus on property taxes- the entire monthly nut, not just home prices.

Cubbie,
Mom is correct! Look at your property taxes and commuting time/expense when doing cost analysis.
What is the motive behind the move? Just wondering, because Buffalo Grove, Arlington Heights are a lot closer.

I compeltly agree, however I can't afford BG or Arlington Heights. I currently live in Palatine, and I am looking for a single family home. Needless to say, I can't afford Palatine either. Not anything decent/nice anyway.

What are the three most important things is real estate? Location, location, location! If you can afford SOMETHING in Palatine it might make more sense to buy what you can afford and make it nice.
Now if you want to live in an area that is more rural than the Grayslake or Lakemoor areas might be better for YOU, but the traffic will likely get worse out that way before it get better (if that ever happens...), tha taxes will likely increase more quickly out there, and the appreciation will likely be less than if you were to purchase a fixer-upper in a more established town...
