I have lived in Matteson all my life. I love it and it is a great place to raise a family. The people are great and everything you need is close by.

Hello, My name is Sheila, and I was raised in Matteson. I must say that Matteson is a very cute little town that is next to a town that is inner changing. It is located next to Chicago Heights, which is not the best neighborhood. If the trailor park that you are moving into is Timber Ridge, then you should be pretty happy with the results. It is a cute community, with great security. From a womans point of view, i have girl friends that live in there, and love it, and I myself feel safe walking down those streets at night. It is a very nice neighborhood. The school for that area is Rich South, which itself has changed greatly over the years, but they offer a wonderful night school program, which my children love. Over all i think that Matteson is a very nice town. But i must say it is located next to towns that are not so great, so if you are looking to purchase property out there, you might want to stick with renting, because the next decade Matteson might deteriate in this wonderful living area.
Good luck on your move.

Unbelievable!
I can not believe that so many of you are so racist! Matteson is a great place to live, maybe even better that what you are currently used to. If you are that concerned with living around people that are not white then stay where you are. It seems as though you are making up a bunch of excuses to not check out your potential living quarters yourself. You sound lazy and uneducated. Stay where you are so that you don't bring the property value down in Matteson which is up and coming.

Trailer Parks and Ahh15
Tornados are God's way of telling you not to move into a trailer park.
Kidding aside I have seen those units and they are about as good as you are going to do for manufactured housing.
Ahhh15,
I love it when people are called lazy and uneducated for voicing opinions that may not be PC. Mattesson is about as up and coming as Melrose Park. I view it as a Schaumburg wanna be that isn't.
If they are moving from Skokie, they are used to living in a better community.
I guess we all define great community to live differently. I don't view Mattesson as a great place to live or raise a family. For that I would go to Tinley Park or even better Orland Park.
Tough Question:
Okay, even tougher question, have any suburbs improved as there black population has increased above 25%? I think Oak Park may be an anomaly due more to high incomes but even there I believe blacks are far from a majority. Olympia Fields is affluent with a large black population. Chatham has a large black population but is not an area I consider desireable.
Any areas other than these that have improved as there black population has increased? What are the nice suburbs with a black majority population?

Skye you are correct
Chatham is one of the 77 Chicago neighborhood areas.
Back to my tough original question. What areas have improved as their black population has increased?

Humboldt
I would have to say Matteson. Have you been there lately? The area is really booming while the black population has increased dramatically.

Matteson
I am not a fan of Matteson. I have been to the Holiday Inn near I-57 and Route 30 for several business meetings, most recently 6 months ago, not exactly my idea of a great area. More like an area that was okay to even good 10 years ago but not getting any better.
How is that area booming? It isn't struggling but most of the businesses there including Olive Garden (had lunch there) have been there awhile and are not getting any better. I see the area as stagnant at best.
Again, an area that only wishes it was Schaumburg (boring, fairly affluent suburb with good places to eat and shop), though it is certainly much better than say Calumet City. I hope it doesn't share the same fate.
Most of the development seems to have already happened in Matteson and is now going on further south into areas approaching Manhattan. I have financed several large projects along the I-57 corridor south of Matteson.
Does anyone have the vacancy rates for Matteson in the commercial office space? That would be telling information.

Lots of development along Lincoln Highway and where Lincoln Mall stands. A Super Target just opened, JC Penny is re-opening a store, Culvers just opened along with Borders, Sports Authory, etc...new homes being developed, the list is endless.
Anyways, considering it is in the South Suburbs where we're starved for some kind of revival I'd say Matteson, from once being an all white communtiy to a communtiy that is mostly black, isn't doing a bad job at all. It's keeping up with the times.
