I moved away when I was in third grade and am planning on coming back to visit over the summer. I remember it as being very rural and pretty quiet but that's a kid's perspective....does anyone know what it's really like there now?

Tinley has grown dramatically over the past few years. Harlem avenue is busier then ever. There is shopping from one end to the other. They just recently revealed plans to re-design the downtown area near the train station. Teehans willbe gone as will some of the other neighboring buildings. In their place will be condos with shopping below and plans for a parking garage.

Well looks like when you go to Tinley to visit your in for a big surprise, in a good way! Tinley Park and Orland park are very big now lots of redeveloping going on sooooo many new houses and they are just great places to be lots to do and most of all they are filled with REAL PEOPLE!!! Take a walk in their downtown area-very nice, small still but some neat things to check out. They also have the midwest ampitheater if you are into music concerts check out their schudule on line. You will really be impressed with Tinley's change.

Yes, I definitely would not describe today's Tinley as rural. There is hardly any open land left there now. But it is a nice town, lots of shopping and nice neighborhoods.

Tinley's nice in that it has grown recently and offers many shopping, dining and residential options. That said, growth comes with a price and the Tinley/Orland area has a lot of traffic. I'd say the area is on the brink of being overcrowded.

yeah, Tinley Park and Orland Park are up to well over 100,000 people now.

Will County is expected to have over a million people within 10 years or so.

I have family that live in the western suburbs they have mentioned it is competive with kids activities and trying to keep up with neighbors. IMO the people in the southwest suburbs aren't concerned with what their neighbors have they don't try to compete with each other.

Ya just what everyone else is saying... OMG you are in for a real surprise. Niether Orland or Tinley are rural in ANY way anymore. Both are nearly completely built out now and have actually begun knocking old stuff down to make way for new.

Traffic in both towns is completely miserable now, pretty much bumper to bumper, yet 159th street, Harlem, La Grange, 171st, 143rd are all still the same 1950s design you will remember from years ago making driving here completely miserable.

Shopping on the other hand as well as dining establishmets and work out facilities for one reason or another has exploded making people in Orland and Tinley some of the most well fed, well dressed, best in shape people I have ever seen. LOL! Just in Orland alone I can think of about 10 different gyms off the top of my head now and that doesn't include Tinley's similar number.

Both Orland and Tinley are in continual competition to out do one another. Tinley started re-doing it's downtown in the late 90's so in 2006 Orland had to create a new one. Orland put in a huge water park off West Ave and 153rd Street in the late 90s, so what do you suppose Tinley did in 2001? Take a guess. hehe If you guessed put up a huge waterpark off 171st and 80th you are right on. Tinley put up a huge new train station in 2001, so what did Orland do? They put up two new stations! lol! Andrew H.S. made some additions in 2001, so of course in 2002 Sandburg had to basically be rebuilt! Tinley added a huge industrial park off 183rd street so Orland had to jump on that bandwagon as well with it's new industrial park going up off of 183rd and La Grange. In 2001 Tinley put up a new library off 179th and 80th Ave so Orland had to build a new one off Ravinia and make theirs bigger no doubt.

This whole thing is actually kinda comical to watch as both towns try to out do one another, but it has led to some great things coming into both towns.

All in all you won't believe what you are going to see when you come back.
