I used to go out with an Italian girl from River Forest whose father was in the Outfit. Nothing to be snobby about.
In fact my buddies Hogan and Farrell had Italian girlfriends from River Forest too. Those River Forest Italian girls liked Irish guys from Austin and south Oak Park.

snobbery is everywhere
you can't really escape snobbery in the snoburbs! but you'll find nice people everywhere too. go ahead and buy a townhouse in the nicest neighborhood you can afford - the schools will be better. good luck to you!
here's a blog about suburban snobbery

I'm 16 now, but when my parents divorced, my dad moved to River Forest and all he could afford was a cheap apartment. I won't lie, I felt insecure, especially going to my friends' mansions after school to play in their newly renovated basement. Yes, there were a few kids who concentrated on how much money was in their trust funds, and yes there were the gossipy soccer moms, but you'll get that anywhere. It's all about meeting and getting to know the right people. Nowadays, we live in a newer, bigger condo and despite our middle class income, I still have the same amazing friends I did in middle school. You'll come to realize that everyone in River Forest has their own issues. Money won't ever change that. Also, once your child goes to high school, I suggest OPRF. I go there now, and it was a true culture shock. You get all walks of life since the school combines River Forest kids and Oak Parkers. By high school, no one cares anymore. Everyone's busy concentrating on their own problems and homework. I say go ahead and move. The people are so welcoming, the school systems are amazing, and with the the city 15 minutes away, I can honestly say I wouldn't want to live anywhere else.
