zydecoted,
YOu need to come back to Chicago and see what has become of your hometown. If you could turn it around you would be a hero.
Sorrowfully, the First Harvey murder of 2007 recorded last night.

Believe it or not, Harvey has been making waves in the art world:

Also, http://www.dixiesquare.com . There are a number of photo exhibitions making use of Harvey's most famous landmark that can be googled up, all very fascinating.

Paxtonian yes! The famous mall scene in The Blues Brothers was filmed there.

Default How Arts Councils can really help

NSH,
I was driving around there this summer one day, and then we went & walked around in the High School. I have been there. I was also there last summer. I go back through once a year. The murders, if you read the eye on Harvey series, are mainly gang related or roberies having to do with drugs. Again, a string of positive, Arts festivals, Music Festivals etc, is a perfect spritzer to begin ealing the ills of an area. For example, if Harvey blocked off a 3 block section of 154th street and re-routed traffic, and allowed only foot traffic for a "Roots and Heritage Festival" where vendors would be selling funnel cakes, ribs, chicken, sausage, pork chops, fried catfish, turkey legs, etc. Imagine that. Imagine Buddy Guy, playing at one end followed up by Elmore James Jr., and then a KanyeWest Protege, and some local youths. On the other end is Black Gospel groups, followed up by a Norteno Group, a Mariachi group and a couple Jazz groups. Other vendors are selling Arts and Craftworks fro the region which display their cultures. Now...Do you think that anyone is going to really want t cause trouble, and is the city (crooked or not) going to mess up their $100-200 per vendor take, plus their license fees, plus a chance for some of these same vendors and similiar events to return???
I don't think so. This is one of the ways an Arts Council pulls people together.
Seed $ comes from Grants distributed soely to the Arts Council and the Festivals budget follows the guidelines of the costs of the liscenses and expenses.
It works

Good News:
Barack O'Bama gives an uplifting speech to the residents of Harvey about hope and promise on MLK day
Bad News:
Hours after the speech ended, a shootout with police just blocks away leaves a man critically wounded.

Yep, he sure did, for MLK day. And unlike most crass politicians, he kept it about MLK.

(Damn, did I just say a kind word about a Democrat? Next thing you know, I'll be living in a Democrat stronghold...)

(Oh crap, I already do....)

Default Barack Obama

He didn't directly say anything about "what he could" do for Harvey? Of course, in my mind, they need to stand up for themselves and appreciate what they can do (in my interests through the Arts)
