North Chicago is perhaps the least well known suburb on Lake Michigan. It is not well regarded in terms of schools. It is dominated by the Great Lakes Naval Training Center and an industrial heritage that still has some manufacturing.

Argonne Dr is a boulevard that run east-west through the town.

I think you might be better off starting a new thread, asking specifically about "What is life like in the suburb of North Chicago" because honestly I have not seen hardly any comments on that. Maybe the Navy folks are not allowed to comment?

Are you military or civilian?

The best suburbs outside of Chicago....all depends on what you are looking for. I currently live in Bloomingdale, which i 35 40in from Chicago on a good day.The housing in chicago...I was stationed at Ft Meade, and any area 15 min radius is comparable to this area where I'm now living. So, expensive so be prepared.Where in Maryland do you live? Crime spreads no matter where you are...South,West , East, and North.weather...If you like 4 seasons, you can enjoy it here. If you don't care about snow, you're ok the people...well...you will be surprised, the traffic, well depending on time of day...rushhour is parking lot conditions, especially on Eisenhower. Get used to it. the schools...well, some are better than others. The far western suburbs...Naperville, Bloomingdale probably are better as far as discipline, better school appearances, etc.

I wish you luck!!!

Highland Park, Illinois. It is very pricey but it is definitely worth it. Very nice homes, and very wealthy people. Great schooling, and stores! There is good food and I love it here. My home was worth the 3 mil i paid for it

Default totally disagree

Sorry Dan, but I totally disagree with you. Yes, traffic is bad, but have you ever been to LA, Houston or New York? You may have lived in Chicago for 30 years, but in the past 30 years I have lived five in Chicago and the remainder in the other three cities listed above, and Chicago is by far the best. If you hate the traffic, try public transportation - it's way better than Houston or LA's, and if you hate the noise, don't live in the city!

As for good suburbs - Naperville often makes Forbes top 10 of places to live in the US, but I personally also like Crete, and Homewood-Flossmore areas. I am from Chicago originally and have lived all over United States (and also some overseas) and I always come back to the Windy City.

The windy city really does blow !!!
Lousy traffic, compounded by some of the worst drivers outside of tijuana.
Crime is about the same as tijuana. Come to think about it....... like the
twilight zone man. Lived there 30 years, still a chicago sports fan, I think
they do something in the delivery room to make it stick. But like that commercial from the 70's - the indian with the tear in his eye looking at all
that garbage.......... perfect metaphor..

I live in glencoe and you have to be making at least 120,000 per year to live here and if not then urin trouble but I suggest Highland Park 14 miles from the city and then a condo there 80,000 apartment 50,000 house though 150,000-x plus the schools are great and the high school {highland park high} was rated 5th best in Illinois!

My family and I may be making a move from our home in TN to Schaumburg. I'd most likely be working in Chicago, her in Schaumburg. We have an infant son so we're looking for something near Schaumburg (preferably on the Chicago side) that is safe, with good schools, parks, and kid activities. We'd be looking for a newer home $300k-$400k. Any help?
