Spiders I am willing to put outside - if I saw a roach - well, my animal loving side would be subdued and I'd first call my husband and then the exterminator!

Absolutely true.
Don't you love how google placed the extermination ad within this thread.

btw: Years ago when we lived a collar burb (won't say which one) I used to use a product called "roach birth control" and that worked wonders. We also would bomb the apartment once in a while, you had to evacuate for that one though. Cover all your stuff, etc.
I would go with a call to the landlord, and an exterminator. If your landlord doesn't seem to care, get a new landlord... Severe infestations of roaches can cause respiratory problems.

Unfortunately, with apartments, roaches can just easily move under the walls to another family's residence. You can clean and scrub and spray all you want, but that's not going to kill the ones living in the other apartments. Your neighbors will likely notice an increase in the number of bugs (because they're fleeing your place), react by doign their own spraying, and the roaches will jsut come back. It's really, really hard to get rid of them unless the whole building is involved--or, better yet, if it's done by a professional exterminator who attacks the whole building.

If you keep your apartment spotless, the roaches won't have as much of an incentive to visit, but they will come back to avoid poison in a neighbor's apartment.

Is your carpet new? Steam cleaning won't kill eggs if they're under the carpet.
