Harvey, IL was name numerous times as the murder capital of the southland. If you was the mayor of Harvey, what would you do to change this impoverish suburb and make it into a vibrant community.
It was a joke. Jdiddy was pointing out that Harvey should improve the educational level of its residents (slight tongue-in-cheek reference to the OP grammar mistakes). That just reminded me of Bush's own grammar blunders. Here is another one: 'Childrens do learn'
There's beauty in the solace of not giving a damn.

If I were the mayor of Harvey the first thing I'd do is invite the Justice Department to come in and do a massive sweep of everybody in city government who's on the take. Of course, I'd probably lose about 3/4ths of my city employees, perhaps including the current mayor of Harvey.

While the corruption is a huge issue, the other major problem is the residents themselves. They need to be accountable for their community, children and themselves. The police and government can only do so much but without residents that care for the community and their property - and respect each other, there is no hope for Harvey, and many other Southland communities.
Not sure why people cannot take responsibility and expect the government and other people to do things for them and take care of them. Until the residents take some pride in their community and respect one another, Harvey will remain the armpit of the South Suburbs.
Well, that's why he said the first thing, not the only thing. In order to change a place like this you have to start at the top. The local government is as corrupt as the day is long and seems to care nothing about rebuilding Harvey.
Anyone who's ever been to Harvey can tell that there are many residents who do care about their community and property. I know several of these homeowners personally.
I'd work to improve the educational level of its residents.
It's not the residents who are carrying the torch of ignorance. Read the Mayor's educational bio, he has a list of educational accolades. Harvey has very corrupt political leaders-hence the mayor and that's were the problem lies! The towns people...pretty much are trying to wait for election and vote, to make a difference. However, they really need a sincere, good-willed opponent to go against Eric Kellogg. The last runners, where as bad as he was, and that's why he got re-elected. Residential resources are very limited regarding change, because it seems the governmental hierachy...doesn't want to hear their voices.
Harvey, Illinois has its' share of problems, just like many other Urban communities do. However, the town is not brain dead. Did you know there were Harvard Busines Law School graduates....who reside in the community and are making a difference? Did you know Harvey has a score of college graduates, who have gone own to play professional sports and break into the entertainment industry? Let's not blame the residents....many of them are working class people, many who are elderly, who can't afford to get out. My parents live in Harvey and they're quite intelligent!
