Cicero is tame compared to Maywood and Harvey-By the way when Capone ran this town it was a much safer place than it is now. There are more illegal Mexicans in this town than any other in Illinois- and gangs thrive in this town- never when Capone ran the town. Remember, Capone and his crew only messed with people who became involved in their business- never senseless drive by shootings where innocent kids are killed accidently by cowardly thugs.

Those magazines also consistently list Houston as one of the top 4 metro areas to live in. And Houston is generally considered a much better place to live in than Chicago if you read magazines that rank cities. I wonder how many of you on this thread would be willing to move to Houston?
With that said, those magazines are BS. I've lived in Naperville and didn't care for it much. But bad reputation? I don't know about that.
The worst suburb reputation wise has to be Maywood. Crime in Maywood is pretty localized to two spots giving one the impression that the entire suburb is a war zone. This is far from true. With that said, would I want to live there? Of course not. But Maywood has a lot of potential. Beautiful, old houses, proximity to transportation and the Eisenhower, close to the city, tree lined streets. Don't be surprised if it comes back one day. I know many of you will say I'm nuts. Where there are old, beautiful houses, great transportation options and proximity to great locales, there eventually is gentrification.

Are there any rougher suburbs (other than Aurora) that are west of the Bellwood/Maywood/Melrose Park zone? I can't think of any, but find that I discover new pockets of crap the deeper I delve into burb exploration.

Madison Ave. and St. Charles Rd. are the main hot spots, but with crime as rampant as it is in Maywood, you will really not find a safe zone anywhere in the town. Some will say the historic part of town with Old mini mansions near Chicago Ave.,b/t 1st and 9th Avenue is the best part-if there is such a best part.

Way west is Carpentersville.... Overrun w/illegals, gangs, drugs, many child molesters and rapists (look it up), drive-by school shootings, toxic chemical plants dumping on the Fox River, horrific schools, a council member charged w/wife-beating, another council member charged w/assault, another council member who called black children "monkeys," hometown to a Brown's Chicken Murderer, a town where whole families w/children have been kidnapped and tortured for drug info. This town is definitely a "pocket of crap"...

I didn't know that about Carpentersville. Wow.
I've also heard that Hodgkins kind of sucks, but that's even with Maywood in terms of east-west proximity. And Hillside has some rough spots.

I lived in Naperville for many years and rarely saw a white person pulled over. Also, my wife (Mexican-American and very Mexican looking) was pulled over a few times in a brand new Toyota Celica for no good reason (although it was the same cop and he stopped pulling her over once she mentioned she was married ) I'm sure many of you remember when that high powered black attorney scared the crap out of the city by threatening a lawsuit due to the fact that they kept pulling his son over.
