I must add that I know of several people of unlimited budget that choose Barrington Hills as well as Wayne, Kenilworth,Geneva and downtown Chicago. LF, though lovely, is not a choice for everyone in upper bracket.

While I appreciate the information, I am trying to learn about what subdivisions are better than others espcially having youg children. I am not really interested East v West arguments.

Sorry for getting off topic - I think Onwentsia gardens is one of the better neighborhoods in LF for kids (waveland park isn't too far - although you'd have to cross Westleigh), also check out Arbor Ridge (a bit more expensive) and the area around Old Elm park.

I lived there for five years not far from the town area in an older neighborhood, and would live there again anytime. It's very pleasant, the people were quite friendly, the town was nice, the beach was nice, and the community was/is beautiful. It's just very nice all around. On top of that, Lake Forest (and all of the North Shore, really) is older. You can spend millions on a cookie cutter McMansion out in the western suburbs, but most of the properties in Lake Forest are very unique. (Edit: I just noticed that someone else had posted just about the same thing--there are some very architecturally significant homes in LF).

I'm a fairly unassuming guy, more of what I would call "classic" than "trendy". I always felt very at home in the community and still do when I'm fortunate to drive through when visiting. LF has a lot of class that other high-end suburbs can't match.

It's one of the nicer communities a person could live in, anywhere in the country, IMO.
