Thanks for your responses. I'm still uncertain, but you've given me food for thought. We love historic preservation and political activism, so perhaps the right house will decide it for us. La Grange and Oak Park definitely top our list. We'll look into River Forest, but my Irish-American husband thinks it may be "too Irish," which he doesn't want for some reason. (Too many people like him, perhaps?) We have time to ponder and look.

La Grange is mostly Irish Catholic. Although there are quite a few protestant churches, they have small congregations compared with the catholic churches. Seems like there are more Democrats than Republicans but I couldn't say for sure.

This is one of the funniest threads I've seen in a long time. Liberals who don't what to live near people who think different thoughts, nor live near people who have similar DNA.
The city must be nice and have vintage homes and low crime, but not have people with expensive cars. Protestant churches are a negative, but Irish Catholics are a negative too.
I guess I always thought liberals were open minded people who were accepting of others beliefs and didn't judge others based on their religion and ethnic origin.

Why are your trying to "match" the town?
Just wondering to the OP- why you have to find a town where everyone is the same? Not sure what the goal is.

I think the goal is to not live amongst a bunch of a**holes.
Liberalism is more of a critique of the status quo than any sort of love fest. Sure, since the 60s there has been a bunch of lovey dovey Kumbaya stuff associated with Liberalism courtesy of the hippies, but before that it was much more of a "fight the power" political philosophy. So it makes sense that a true liberal would be uncomfortable living amongst the American Bourgeoise excess that they are reacting against. The Barringtons would make any true Liberal cringe in disgust.

There is no reason to get nasty. I am neither a Republican, nor a Democrat, I don't judge people by their political affiliation, nor by their religion.
Jay on another thread is a progressive liberal, and she was able to ask many questions without insulting anyone's religion, hometown, or political affiliation. Lets just have some civility here.
