Since diversity was something they were looking for, they would naturally be alarmed if a town didn't have a mix of religions. Once again, this is not how I would go about choosing a town, but I don't think they are trying to avoid white protestants. As a White mostly Anglo-Saxon Protestant with an English last name who's daughter is elligible for DAR (laugh!), I am not offended by this statement.

Just becasue you are not offended doesn't mean it is not offensive. You probably didn't mean to offend when you described conservatives as a*******, and yet others were offended.

Is it too much to keep name calling out of this thread? Or generalizing about specific groups?

BTW - DAR isn't that big a deal, its the Colonial Dames that require serious vetting.

Everyone needs to calm down and get back on track.

Lookout did not once say that conservatives are A-holes... he said the OP doesn't want to live around the A-hole types that he/she did in Barrington where they were made to feel like lepers.

This forum is for helping people find where they will be happiest and there are specific rules against racist or personal attacks, but I don't see how asking about the religious make up of a town falls under either of those.

If you don't have advice for the OP, do not post in this thread again. Anyone who does so will be infracted.

Marlene,

I don't know how accurate Sperling's is as a source, since they give the exact same percentages for religious and political affiliation to Barrington. They might just be giving regional averages.

Its not your fault. I only checked because the numbers seemed a bit off to me.

That site gives the same breakdown for LaGrange and Barrington and every other suburb. Its not a good tool.

OK folks, here's an idea- instead of bickering about how many Democrats or Republicans a place has, how about taking a trip there to meet the locals?
I've been to places that was more of one than another that I wouldn't live at on a dare because the people I met were all jerks. Of course, if you're looking to be with fellow jerks, that ALSO works..

Default Lefty family with no t.v., no WII, just moved to Western Springs (next door to La Grange)

Just wanted to let you know we are here!

We wanted to move to La Grange, but found a house we love in Western Springs, in the same (LT) high school district as La Grange.

People here seem to value progressive things: bikeable and walkable streets/public transportation/eco-friendly living/healthy and fresh food/libraries and schools, etc.

We're hoping that they also value ethnic diversity. We've seen little evidence either way so far.

And to those who wonder why progressives want to be around other progressives: part of it is wanting to be in an area that welcomes diverse kinds of people. That is part of the "creed" of most (not all) progressives.

It is the part of the "creed" of many (not all) conservatives to want to be around people who are part of the same (ethnic, social, $, religious) tribe. And to scorn those who don't belong.

Take a look at the Democratic and Republican conventions and see whose delegates mostly look the same, and whose look like a real big human-family reunion.
