On the whole, the housing market Downstate offers more value. Those $100K houses in Bloomington-Normal are quite ordinary places. Out in the countryside, one can find bargains, generally housing needing a slight bit of work for much less. One house not too far from me is selling for $12K, though I imagine that one really is a "handyman special". As for Paxton, I've been looking at several very nice homes in the $90K range. Look up 60957 on Yahoo Realestate and you'll see what they're like.
