Here are a few Id recommend, all are easlily within your 45 mile request:

Naperville: Big and growing like a weed. Bad traffic most of the time, but every amenity available. Downtown is thriving, great schools (often rated best in the state), riverwalk, lots of nightlife, endless shopping, etc. TONS of weekend activities and festivals.

Geneva: along the Fox River, nice downtown, good schools, quiet and close to everything.

St.Charles: almost the same as Geneva, but more geared towards younger folks (ie LOTS of pubs, etc) whereas Geneva is geared more towards the older crowd. Great schools, lots of festivals, etc.

Wheaton: nice downtown, more great schools, quiet for its size, lots of shopping, very church-oriented.

Glen Ellyn: similar to Wheaton in a way. Very community-oriented, great schools, another nice downtown.

Ill add more later if youre interested.

Default Great schools - easy access to interstates

Lockport and Plainfield are both known for their excellent schools. Lockport is about 35 miles southwest of Chicago; Plainfield is about another 5 miles or so west. And easy access to the interstates, metra, etc.

Let me know if you want help finding a home.

Steve did a very good job here! These are nice areas.

I lived in McHenry County and loved Crystal Lake.
District 46 provides some of the best schools in the state, the in town area is quaint, crime is low, and you can catch the express train to downtown in a half hour.

Woodstock is also nice, however, your now heading even further from Chitown.
