Theres much better places to live than the Midwest and im sure theres worse, too. Theres good reasons why people move from the Midwest to the Gulf southern States ...especially for retirement.
I don't like sunny days.

I enjoy cool, damp, cloudy, foggy days.

I hate when the weatherman says "Looks like next will be sunny and hot, much better then last week's below normal temps."

Default They're just opinions- there is no right or wrong

The past posts reflect a certainty. Many of us differ in the weather we like!. This is good news since it means not everyone will be flocking to the south and southwest. The popularity of retirement communities "up North" reflects this. I dis-like the cold the older I get. I also don't like heat and humidity. I do like warm dry weather. This summer when it was upper 80's and 90's but humidity was below 50% the windows were open and it was nice. Many neighbors had their windows closed and A/C running. Now my cousin, would move to Northern Minnesota if his family weren't here. He hates hot weather and prefers weather under 60 degrees. I do go out and run even if it's in the 20's or 30's. The snow forces me inside on the "gerbil wheel" (treadmill) I do see people out walking all year in my neighborhood. But, the park district plows the path around the lake and we have lot's of eastern European and Russians living around here and they're used to this weather.
I do agree with previous poster about 7 months. 5 months of "can count on it" nice weather to be outside Mid-May to Mid-Oct. The other 7 months: 2 months of probably/maybe go outside weather. 2 months of here and there outside weather and 3 months of winter. Now my preferred outside weather is 60+ degrees and no precipitation. We will all differ on this. Chicago has many positives, but if you polled all 8 million+ residents, likely a good majority would say Chicago winters are too long/too cold.
Weather would be my #1 reason for leaving. Cost of living #2. Local politics #3. Family and steady work are still over-ruling reasons for leaving. This is still a very liveable and nice area to live in; better than most other areas I have visited. However these opinions don't make me, or anyone else, "right or wrong".

Quite the opposite. I said there was plenty to do and that I will miss it. there are many other things I will miss...good pizza, good hot dogs, public transportation, etc.

But I won't miss the corruption, the traffic, the crime, the bitter cold, having to work and get up at 5am every day (I get to SAH when we move YAY!), the constant construction of the same roads year after year (tied in with the corruption), I could go on and on.

I'm sure that moving to the hot and humid west Texas won't be paradise. i'm already dreading the heat and the bugs , having to actually socialize (I'm a total introvert) LOL.

I don't expect perfection when we move. But I am looking forward to the change in everything.

And I don't crawl. *sticks nose in the air*

LOL

My wife and I hate Orlando, FL, where we are now. Although we've been down here for over 10 years, we're planning to move back up north, just waiting on our kids to finish high school before transplanting them, in about 3 years, as they'll be in college anyways. Orlando is a nice place to visit and obviously caters to the tourists, but living there on a daily basis is awful, particularly the drivers. Although it's nice at this time of year (winter), I'll take three or four months of snow and the other three seasons over only 2 months of nice weather and heat and humidity the rest of the year in FL. The people down here are really idiotic. There are some nice, but it's a me-first, I'll beat you to where I'm going attitude that really has me and my wife wanting out of central Florida.

And let me mention the dirt, C'dale is so dirty, not so much as in garbage but nothin's new, no new construction, old homes rundown type dwelling, alot of nature on the ground, thay don't believe in raking, I hate it here soooooo much. I've got a year least and then I'm runnin the heck out of here

However, I never stop planning for the day when I really, truly, no kidding leave the South for good. I thought that happened the day I crossed the Fla./Ga. state line back in 1980, on my way back to Chicagoland. However, the above happened, & I ended up in Houston for a few years (family had moved here). Moved back to Chi in '84, for what I thought was the final time, but had to move back here in '90 (family emergency).

I've never stopped saying I want to go home, or quit whining about the heat. I even bought a pair of Ruby Slippers, but they didn't work. Clicking the heels together just made some of the glitter fall off.

Another thing I greatly miss is being in The Land Of Public Transportation! Just sketchy bus service here (and none where I live) & the closest thing to a train is the "light rail" put in several years ago, that goes from The Galleria (sure, people with the $$$ to shop there take mass transit) to The Astrodome (which has been vacant for several years). Of course, this IS oil country, so I guess it isn't that big of a surprise. On the plus side, gas was down to $1.56 gal. yesterday. I can finally afford to fill up my tank again.

But, I'd still rather be in Northern Illinois.
I am a Chicago native that loves Houston and would never come back. I understand you not liking it though. If you hate heat and love transportation, this city is not for you! Public transportation in Houston is pathetic to say the least. Houston is a love it or hate it kind of place in general.

Now the city I couldn't stand living in was Naperville. I like ethnic diversity and I hate keeping up with the Jones's mentality. Chicago is pretty segregated in general, and that always bothered me. I remember when my wife and I were looking at houses in Berwyn (before we decided to move to Texas and long after I graduated from NNHS) my sister in law, who lives in Naperville said very seriously "We have diversity. There's a black family three doors down." I started laughing out loud.

crb, if you love Houston so and don't miss Chicago, why keep coming back to this forum? Just curious.

Houston is nice if you like living in a sauna in summer. Chicago is nice if you like living in a freezer in winter.

I like freezers more than saunas, so Chicagoland it is! lol
