We may be relocating to the North Carolina/Charlotte area for work in the next few months. But there will always be a special place in my heart for the Chicagoland area.

Whitetrash? Like KNITGIRL said, most people complain about there being too many hispanic immigrants in Elgin. Maybe you're judging the town based on your riverboat excursions? "Whitetrash" tourists come from all over Chicagoland (and Milwaukee) for the riverboats...

Agreed! Only maybe to a somewhat lesser extent. Great post!
However, in all seriousness, if you hate where you live, you should at least have some kind of a plan to leave. If you hate Elgin for the reasons posted, you are in luck, because you do not really have to go that far away to get to a different feeling place, and you might not have to change jobs. Moving somewhere like LA may be tougher given the housing market, but I know some people who did it- they just put some energy into it.

The direction of the forum turned to places you can't stand where you lived before. And I answered, "Yes, Naperville." Naperville is not Chicago.

Now the city I couldn't stand living in was Naperville. I like ethnic diversity and I hate keeping up with the Jones's mentality. Chicago is pretty segregated in general, and that always bothered me. I remember when my wife and I were looking at houses in Berwyn (before we decided to move to Texas and long after I graduated from NNHS) my sister in law, who lives in Naperville said very seriously "We have diversity. There's a black family three doors down." I started laughing out loud.

I don't mind you in the forum crb, I just think you lack consistency.

Not a concept unique to Naperville. Ask anyone who lives in Downers Grove or Elmhurst if they think their town is diverse and 95% will say "yes" without a second's hesitation. Few are going to admit that their community represents a segregated area, even to themselves.

So just because I made a comment about Chicago's segregation and how it bothers me means I don't love Chicago? I'd say the fact that you pointed out in your quote that I criticize Houston and Chicago proves I'm consistent.

saying you would never come back means you love Chicago??.... Your segregation comment is a whole other matter. I'm even more confused. It's ok crb, I'll just stop reading your posts. Have a nice Christmas.

With any luck I'll be in the Chicago area at some point soon. Not because I love it so much, but because I would be working. My family and I left south Florida about two years ago for the twin cities in Minnesota and like the area fine but its not working out re: the job market. Too bad, because we made major investments and were ready to stay. There are other reasons we're okay with giving it up, but the real kiss of death was employment. The job market here is a little too blindered.
Regarding the subject, we're much more open minded about places to live now; as long as we can work there and have our son in a good school, it'll be just fine.
