Other than weather, San Diego doesn't have much to offer. If you're going to pay that much for real estate, why not the Bay Area? Too cold for you?

I hate Naperville. I wish I lived in Yorkville or Lockport if anywhere in Illinois. Otherwise I'd like to move to Anchorage, AK.

June-Mid Oct.= I love Chicago, the Midwest
End Oct & April & May= Eh, it's mediocre
Nov-March= This place sucks, it's gray or frigid when will it be warm enough to cycle? The first snow or 2 are fine, but really if winter could be 2 short months with copious amounts of snow and spring would be mild instead of a weather yo-yo with lake effect cold, this place would be heaven.
Go explore! This is a great country with so much to see and many nice areas. However, there is no perfect. There is often better; but not perfect. Amen and thank you.

For me, there is a sort of "perfect", but it not only isn't in the Midwest, it's not in the US!
About 20 years ago, the Tribune had a feature on a town in Norway (which name I CAN NOT remember!) that although it was inside the Arctic circle, because of its location on the Gulf Stream the temps have never gone above 80 or below 40. Sounds like the perfect climate to (for) me! Now to just get some kroner together...

So sorry to invade your territory, Lookout Kid. I was originally merely responding to the op about Elgin.
I'm not trashing Chicago. I love a whole lot about Chicago -- especially the downtown and lakefront, the food, the public transportation, et cetera. It just happens that I moved to South Carolina to be near family, and I absolutely love where I live now. I'm not saying get out as soon as possible because it's awful here.
I like to see people happy where they're at, but don't think running away from a place is going to necessarily be the answer. It's really hard starting over in a new place, and your problems sometimes travel with you.
Enough of my philosophy for the day. Please send the rain we're having in Chicago today to South Carolina as they're in their worst drought in 60 years. See, not everything's perfect there!

Wow Bawlmore! And you want to be a Police Officer. Ok, that's your choice but you better make sure your ready. Just where have you been in Baltimore, the Inner Harbor? Baltimore is a very dangerous city. Granted, you will not be bored if your a Police Officer, just make sure your Kevlar is fully tested.
I don't know why folks do not like the Midwest. In my years I have lived all over. WV, MD, PA, NJ, VA, IL, and now GA with my career. In the military previous, stateside was KY, MO, WA, and AK. Of course nothing has ever come close to Alaska, but my 3 years living in Crystal Lake was wonderful.
If you like Americana, then you cannot go wrong with the midwest. I honestly feel that our American culture is endangered, and locations like IL, WI, MN, IN, and the City of Chicago are about the only locations left of it's survival. New England also holds true.
Granted, just my opinion. If my wife would move (hates the cold with arthritis) I would come back to Illinois in a heartbeat. Right back to Crystal Lake or Geneva. Heck, as stated before about the Victorian's in Elgin, that could also be a possiblity.
If your young and have the travel bug though I say go for it, but don't look for self approval by hating your hometown. That is just your age. When time passes Elgin will be your home and the older one becomes the hometown pride will grow.
Im an old West Virginian, moved and lived all over. Would not change a thing. But though WV offers little, it is and always will be my proud home.
Good Luck on your dream of being a Police Officer.

Ready to leave Naperville. I think it is mainly based on my employer, but has certainly left a terrible taste in my mouth for Chicago area - will not return after I move in the next few weeks. Just put my current job behind me and close the chapter on Chicago.
I like the midwest in general - but cost of living in Chicago is ridiculous for being in the midwest.
